About the event
When the Call Is Over: Reconnecting with Life Outside the Uniform
Summary
Most first responders expect the job to be stressful. What surprises many of us is how difficult it can be to come home — not physically, but psychologically.
You can be sitting at the dinner table while mentally replaying a call. You can be on vacation while thinking about staffing shortages. You can spend an entire evening with your children and barely hear a word they say.
The challenge isn't simply stress. Rather, it's poor command over our attention.
This presentation examines how operational stress, hypervigilance, and constant problem-solving shape our relationship with our own mind long after the shift ends.
Participants will explore why connection often becomes difficult, why listening is harder than we think, and how attention serves as the foundation of meaningful relationships.
Because our families don't experience us through our physical presence. They experience us only when we are emotionally and mentally present.
Key Learning Objectives
Recognize how operational stress can affect family relationships and personal well-being.
Understand the role attention plays in connection, communication, and presence.
Identify common barriers that prevent first responders from fully disengaging from work mode.
Learn practical strategies for transitioning from shift mode to home life.
Develop skills that support deeper listening, stronger relationships, and greater psychological recovery.
