As a paramedic for 12 years, I've witnessed countless tragedies. What I never expected was becoming a casualty myself - not physically, but mentally. The weight of those experiences silently accumulated until I could barely function.
The turning point came during our department's Responder Health Program training. Sitting in that room, I realized I wasn't alone or broken - I was human.
Through the program, I learned practical skills for managing stress and trauma exposure. The techniques for psychological first aid became as important as any medical protocol I'd memorized.
The Armor Up America app became my daily companion. On particularly rough days, I'd use the self-regulation techniques after shifts. The symptom tracker helped me recognize when I was spiraling before it became overwhelming. Most importantly, having resources literally in my pocket meant help was always accessible, even at 3 AM after a devastating call.
What makes these program vital is their understanding of our unique challenges. They don't just offer generic mental health advice - they address the specific trauma exposure, sleep disruption, and cultural barriers first responders face.
My chief recently asked why I advocate so strongly for Responder Health. My answer was simple: "Because I'm still here."
Without the training and support from our Responder Health Program, I likely would have become another statistic. Instead, I've developed resilience tools that allow me to continue serving my community while protecting my own wellbeing.
For any department questioning the value of these programs - they don't just support your team, they save us. And in saving us, they ensure we can keep saving others.
